Local Baby Gets Second Shot at Life

A baby is beating the odds in our region after being diagnosed with a rare birth defect.
Imagine being told 14 weeks into your pregnancy your child has a rare abnormality and most likely won't live. A Cambria County couple faced that senario, and relied on their faith to get them through an unlikely journey. Kevin and Jen Sheridan are thrilled to be able to kiss their baby Owen's head and hold tight to his tiny fingers. They say he's happy and responsive and proving to everyone he's a survivor. While in the womb, Owen was diagnosed with an Encephalocele, a 7 pound growth on his head which caused part of his brain to grow outside of the skull. The chances of Owen surviving were slim. His family wasn't even expecting to bring him home. They're thrilled he's made it to 5 and a half weeks old and want to thank everyone who's helped on the way.

The Sheridans traveled to Boston where Owen had the risky surgery. They say love and support from friends, family and even complete strangers is what got them through the past few weeks. And it's what they will need to get them through an uncertain future. For now they're enjoying every moment. The Sheridan's say Owen isn't out of the woods yet, he has long road ahead. But it's a story of hope and inspiration.

There will be a spaghetti dinner and other community events to help out the Sheridan's with medical costs.
