STATE COLLEGE – Danny Diekroeger collected three hits and the State College Spikes came back to tie the game, but the Jamestown Jammers produced a ninth-inning run to halt the Spikes’ winning streak at four with a 3-2 decision at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Tuesday night.
Diekroeger, the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2014 10th-round draft choice out of Stanford, put together the first three-hit performance of his professional career, including a double. The Woodside, CA native also kept the Spikes’ (8-4) hopes alive in the ninth inning with a two-out single that put the winning run on base.
Jamestown (4-8) took the lead for good in the top half of the ninth thanks to a leadoff triple by Chase Simpson and a sacrifice fly by David Andriese.
State College had erased a 2-0 deficit in the sixth inning when Ronnierd Garcia knocked in a pair of runs with his two-run single.
Rowan Wick, named the New York-Penn League Player of the Week on Monday, went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored. Jhohan Acevedo reached base three times as well, adding a single, a walk and a time hit by pitch.
Spikes starter Will Anderson went the first five innings on the mound, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and three walks. Anderson also struck out four.
Reliever Tyler Bray (1-1) took the loss after yielding the Jammers’ tie-breaking run on one hit over a total of two innings. Bray recorded two strikeouts in the effort.
Nicholas Neumann (1-0) allowed the Spikes’ tying runs in the sixth, but picked up the win thanks to the Jammers’ ninth-inning run. Neumann gave up just one earned run on three hits over three innings of work. Montana DuRapau (1) got the save despite allowing a hit and a walk while striking out one in the ninth.
Jordan Luplow went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a stolen base for Jamestown.
The defeat marked the third straight at home for the Spikes, their longest home losing streak since 2012.
Wednesday, the Spikes complete their two-game mini-series with the Jammers in a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send left-hander Dewin Perez (1-0) to the mound. Jamestown will go with right-hander Tyler Eppler (0-0), the sixth-round draft choice of the Pirates in 2014.
