CLEARFIELD - The state's largest health insurance company says a local hospital is doing a good job improving patient care and safety. It's the fourth year in a row, that Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield has honored Penn Highlands Clearfield.
The hospital takes part in Highmark's QualityBLUE Hospital Pay for Performance Program, that involves improving the outcomes for patients and striving for what's called defect-free care.
Penn Highlands Clearfield has been focusing on two initiatives. One aims to reduce the likelihood of infections related to surgery. The other involves preventing bloodstream infections that can occur when a patient has a tube inserted to receive fluids or medication.
The hospital says it managed to reduce its already low surgical site infection rate and eliminate central line blood stream infections.
Penn Highlands Clearfield says it's now working on new initiatives including preventing infections and blood clots; preparing patients to minimize their having to return to the hospital within 30 days after discharge; and improving processes to discuss resuscitation wishes with patients.
