Giant African Snails Seized at LAX

The shipment of 67 giant African snails is the largest ever seen by customs officials.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted some interesting cargo at LAX.

67 live snails!

The snails arrived from Nigeria, bound for San Dimas, California.

Accompanying paperwork indicated they were for human consumption.

However, a team of entomologists identified them as Giant African Snails... an extremely invasive species.

Officials say the snails can grow up to 8 inches long, 5 inches wide and can live for a decade,

They're one of the world's largest land snails, and have been known to carry parasites harmful to people.

The snails have been transferred to a USDA station for processing.
