ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - A new Penn State study gives thumbs up to a type of clinic developed by an Altoona doctor. Partnering for Health Services, opened by Dr. Zane Gates, uses a both volunteers and paid staff members to treat patients. The clinic also offers free and paid plans, depending on income.
The study by a Penn State Altoona professor of economics estimates that the clinic saved UPMC Altoona hospital more than $200,000 a year in lower emergency room visits and admissions. The study also found that patients with chronic conditions tended to go to the clinic more often which could result in better health.
