Flu Prompts Hospital Visiting Restrictions

If you have flu symptoms please don't visit patients!

A health system with hospitals in our region is asking some potential visitors to stay home.

UPMC, which operates two hospitals in our region says if you have fever, body aches, headaches, sore throat or chills don't visit patients in any of its medical facilities.

The health system says its hospitals which include UPMC Altoona and UPMC Bedford Memorial, have had 175 in-patients with confirmed or suspected cases of influenza as of Wednesday night. That's up from this time last year when the flu peaked earlier.

UPMC says 100 percent of the cases confirmed in its labs, have been the H1N1strain, which tends to strike younger and middle-aged people the hardest.

Across the state 95 percent of cases have been H1N1. That strain is covered in the flu vaccine, and health experts say it's not too late to get one.
