Early Test Predicts Premature Birth

Mom can be screened in first trimester.

European researchers say a non-invasive test could help predict if pregnant women will deliver premature babies.

Scientists at Imperial College London analyzed urine samples from more than 400 pregnant women in their first trimester. They found certain metabolites revealed a risk for a baby being born prematurely or having poor growth.

Researchers say they did not find one underlying cause for premature deliveries, but say a woman's diet and lifestyle are possible factors. Scientists say metabolic profiling could one day lead to a simple test that could reveal a woman's risk of having a premature baby
