ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - Drug officials talk about a drug treatment they say could make a big difference in our region.

Heroin continues to be a major problem drug in our area. Police made another big bust last week n Altoona. Tuesday night a group of doctors and drug experts talked about a potential treatment.

Dr. Christopher Davis spoke to a crowd in Altoona about Vivitrol. Its a once a month injection that doctors say blocks the receptors that give people a high from opiates and alcohol.

Dr. Davis says because it doesn’t provide any high and it has to be given by a doctor, there’s less chance of it being on the streets.

That's important to Blair County Drug and Alcohol Director Judy Rosser because it's been a problem in the past. Drugs that have been designed to help people kick the habit have ended up causing problems. And she's seen this drug work locally.

The drug came up at a meeting for loved ones of addicts last week. Michael Larocco is a drug counselor and former addict himself. And he's glad to see a treatment like this come to the area.

The doctors did say this isn't a good drug for addicts who are still using but once the opiates are out of their system its works very well.
