Doctor Honored In Memory

WINDBER, SOMERSET COUNTY--- Dr. Richard Mural dedicated his life to finding a cure for cancer, but lost his battle with the disease in June.  He was honored Friday for his achievements.

"He was so special and contributed so much," said Tom Kurtz, CEO Windber Research Institute.

Mural worked tirelessly for years, studying cancer, how it started and why it lived in hopes of one day finding a cure for it at WRI.  To honor him and his achievements the center decided to name its bank after him.

"He dedicated his life to it and we had no doubts from the time of his death we would do something here for him," said Kurtz.

A new sign was unveiled in his honor, his family; friends and colleagues were there for the emotional tribute.

"It's ironic because Richard's tissue is in our bank- he donated his tissue to our cause,” said Kurtz.  “It's only appropriate the tissue bank that he helped nurture and create to one of the premier tissue banks in the world a piece of him is remaining here and we do research with it."

Mural worked up until the day he died, and although he was not able to see a cure for cancer his legacy will live on through his work in science.
