DEP Fall Home Preperations

Fall is coming and the DEP wants you to get your house ready.
ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - Fall is coming and the DEP wants you to get your house ready.

Randy Colyer from Greenwood Pools and Spas says when you get a pool ready for winter you have to know what you're doing and use some common sense. You have to treat the water with winter chemicals, drain the hoses so they don’t freeze and burst, and make sure covers are secured. And dumping pool water into waterways without a permit is a violation of the Clean Steams Law.

The Department of Environmental Protection also wants people to take a look at their fuel tanks before fall gets here. You should look for rust and damage to any hoses or pipes. Tom Irwin of Fiore True Value Hardware in Altoona says summer lawn care can lead to nicks and cracks in fuel lines.

The DEP estimates a fourth of all Pennsylvania homes use heating oil. And they want to prevent any fuel leaks. Irwin says those leaks are costly to the consumer and the environment.
