Democratic Candidates Debate

Job creation concerns locally.
ALTOONA - Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate has fallen to 6 percent under Governor Tom Corbett, but Monday night the discussion was about how low can it go.

When you ask Joe Hughes what talking point he's most interested in for the upcoming election, the answer comes quickly.

“Job creation. Without a doubt,” Joe Hughes says.

Hughes retired from the National Guard after more than two decades of service a few months back. He found a job recently at UHaul, but it wasn't easy.

“For me just getting out and looking for a job it's very big. Now I understand the market a lot better,” Hughes says.

On Monday night the four democratic candidates for governor highlighted the need for jobs in the state.

“This is a place that could actually hum with activity. Economic growth should be something we expect and this should be a place where everyone should get a job that wants one,” Candidate Tom Wolf says.

Candidate Allyson Schwartz says her key to more jobs is education.

“I want to make sure job training works and the relationship between community colleges and universities is very important here,” Schwartz says.

For Katie McGinty, she cited her work with the state's Department of Environmental Protection that helped create thousands of wind energy jobs in the state in the early 2000s.

She'd like to see that focus return.

“We have sunk from 7th to 48th when I was secretary and we created three thousand jobs, clean high tech jobs,” Candidate Katie McGinty says.

For Rob McCord, he says his work speaks for itself.

“I have experience not only creating thousands of jobs in PA, but getting important work done on a bipartisan basis in Harrisburg for the last few years,” Candidate Rob McCord says.

Neither of the candidates outlined any specific job creation plans tonight. Under Governor Corbett Pennsylvania's unemployment rate is the 24th lowest in the nation. This was the last debate for the candidates before the primary election next Tuesday.
