Curve Rally For Victory

Akron took a lead in the 7th inning, but Altoona battled back in the 8th to retake the lead and win the game.
ALTOONA –  The Altoona Curve rallied in the eighth inning to defeat the Akron RubberDucks 4-3 Monday evening at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Mel Rojas, Jr. was at the center of the scoring for Altoona, collecting three hits including a two-RBI single in the eighth that won the game for Altoona.
 
Altoona struck first in the game by plating a pair of runs in the first inning. After Gift Ngoepe and Alen Hanson reached base on a single, Rojas hit an RBI double down the left field line that plated Ngoepe. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Matt Curry knocked a single to left that made the score 2-0 after Hanson scored from third.
 
Akron was held in check for the first four innings but scored a pair of runs in the fifth. After Ronny Rodriguez clubbed a leadoff home run in the fifth to make it 2-1, Jordan Smith walked with one out and later scored on an RBI groundout by Tyler Naquin.
 
The ‘Ducks took their first lead of the game in the seventh. After Alex Lavisky reached on a single, he scored two batters later when Tyler Holt hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right.
 
Rojas has a great night for Altoona in the victory and it was capped in the eighth inning. After back-to-back singles by Jarek Cunningham and Ngoepe, Hanson walked to load the bases for Rojas who roped a two-RBI single to right that gave Altoona the 4-3 lead.
 
Joely Rodriguez tossed 5.2 innings and received a no-decision. The southpaw allowed two runs on three hits while walking three batters. Joan Montero (1-1) picked up the win for Altoona after he hurled 2.1 innings in relief. Giovanni Soto (0-1) took the loss after allowed the two runs in the eighth. Emmanuel de Leon snagged his second save in as many opportunities for Altoona.
 
The Curve will continue their series against the RubberDucks on Tuesday night for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. Tuesday’s game will be a Two-For-Tuesday presented by Atlantic Broadband with buy one, get one free deals on tickets, hot dogs, and small popcorns.

RHP Adrian Sampson (3-2, 2.32) will make the start for the Curve in Tuesday’s night game against the ‘Ducks RHP Toru Murata (2-0, 2.30)
