Curve Offense Stalls in Loss

Altoona gets just four hits in 3-0 loss to Bowie.
ALTOONA - The Curve's offense was held to just four hits and shut out, 3-0, in the series finale loss to the Bowie Baysox on Sunday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Drew Maggi finished the game 1-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to five games in the loss.

Bowie scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning off Tom Harlan (0-1) when John Ruettiger singled to left with two outs to score Ronald Bermudez, who’d walked to start the inning. They’d get two more that were charged to Harlan in the sixth after he allowed the first two men to reach. Emmanuel de Leon followed Harlan in sixth and walked Garabez Rosa to load the bases with no one out. David Adams hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Marrero from third to extend Bowie’s lead to, 2-0. Another fielder’s choice by Ruettiger followed and extended Bowie’s lead to, 3-0.

The Curve offense just wasn’t able to find a rhythm most of the evening versus Baysox starter Tim Berry (5-5), who tied a season-high with seven innings pitched. Berry walked the first two batters of the second with no one out but then Elias Diaz was picked off of second. Willy Garcia followed with a sac bunt to move Keon Broxton to second but he was stranded there when Kelson Brown grounded out.

Dan Gamache doubled to left with one out in the sixth and Stetson Allie walked with two outs. Again, the inning stalled as Diaz struck out to end it.

Despite allowing the three runs, Harlan pitched well on Sunday night, going 5+ innings and giving up the three runs in his third Double-A start. Ryan Beckman tossed two scoreless innings and allowed one hit out of the bullpen.

Maggi, who was 4-for-4 last night, reached base twice in his first two plate appearances tonight (HBP, single) to make it six straight appearances at the plate that he’d reached base safely. He was finally retired in the sixth with a groundout.

Altoona (39-63) now embarks on a seven-game, seven-day road trip beginning at 7:05 p.m. Monday night in New Britain where they’ll meet the Rock Cats. On the bump in the series opener for the Curve will be LHP Zack Dodson (2-6, 5.65), who beat the Rock Cats the last time he faced them in New Britain. He’ll be opposed by ‘Cats RHP Tyler Duffey (5-2, 4.17).
