Curve Fall To Erie

Altoona got into an early hole, and couldn't climb out.
ERIE – An early five run lead for Erie was too much for the Curve offense to overcome in a, 6-3, loss to the SeaWolves in the first game of the four-game series Friday night at Jerry Uht Park.  Adalberto Santos drew a walk in the seventh inning to extend his on-base streak to 21 games while Carlos Paulino reached base four times, drove in a run and scored two runs in the loss.

Both teams were unable to score in the first two frames but Erie found four runs in the third off Nate Baker (3-2) with two coming on a single from Jamie Johnson and two more coming from a double off the bat of Tyler Collins.  They added another in the fourth when James McCann homered to left to make it, 5-0.

From there, the Curve were able to get on the board in the fifth when Santos hit a sac fly to right that scored Paulino and cut the deficit to four.  The Howlers added another in the sixth before Altoona would score single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to end the scoring.  Paulino played a hand in the final two runs as well when he was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch later in the seventh.  His RBI single in the eighth brought home Justin Howard for the night’s finale run.  He finished the night 2-for-2.

Baker worked five innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits to suffer the loss.  Tyler Waldron pitched a pair of innings in relief for the Curve in his first appearance with Altoona since a shoulder injury sidelined him in early April and allowed a run on two hits.  Luis Sanz also saw action on Friday night, pitching an inning to get back in sync after missing three games due to a suspension stemming from the benches-clearing brawl last Friday night with Harrisburg.

The Curve were also able to account for four outfield assists on Friday night.  Alex Dickerson threw out Eugenio Suarez trying to score in the first inning before Gregory Polanco hosed Tyler Collins out at third to end the third inning.  Andy Vasquez got in on the party as well, throwing out Brandon Douglas at the plate in the sixth and getting Wade Gaynor at third in the eighth.

Polanco finished the night 1-for-2 to extend his hitting streak to eight games dating back to August 8.
Altoona (57-66) and Erie (65-58) continue the series with a pair of games beginning at 5:05 p.m. Saturday night from Jerry Uht Park in Erie.  Altoona will send LHP Eliecer Navarro (3-5, 4.35) to the mound in Game 1 while following with RHP Jason Townsend (4-3, 6.60) in the second game.  Erie sends LHP Ramon Garcia (0-3, 5.10) to the mound in Game 1 while RHP Victor Larez (7-7, 4.83) tosses in the second game.
