Curve Drop To 15 Games Below .500

Altoona had a 2-0 lead early, but Reading scored 5 unanswered runs to win.
ALTOONA – An early two-run lead couldn’t stick for the Curve as the Fightins scored five unanswered runs to defeat the Curve, 5-2, in front of 6,250 fans at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Alen Hanson finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI to run his season-best hit streak to 11 games, which is also a team season-high.

Joan Montero took to the mound for his first start of the season and blanked the Fightins in the top of the first before the Curve used some early offense in the bottom half to give him an early lead. With one away, Andy Vasquez clubbed his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot to left-center, and the Curve had the lead, 1-0.

Montero blanked Reading for the second and third innings before the Curve added a run in the bottom of the third. Jarek Cunningham tripled off Hoby Milner (5-3) and later scored when Hanson stroked a single through the middle of a drawn-in infield.

That ended the scoring for the Curve as Milner went on to blank them for his final four innings of work. All told the Reading southpaw finished seven innings and allowed just two runs while whiffing six.

Reading scored a single run off Montero in his four innings of work before scoring three times off reliever Pat Ludwig (0-1), who was making his Double-A debut. Ludwig gave up a run in the fifth before two more in the sixth. In total, Ludwig lasted three innings and gave up three runs on six hits (four doubles).

Yao-Hsun Yang tossed a scoreless eighth before Quinton Miller allowed the fifth and final run for Reading in the ninth.

Altoona (25-40) can still earn a series win with a victory in the final game of the series with Reading (32-33), which takes place at 6 p.m. Sunday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

On the bump for the Curve in the homestand finale will be LHP Joely Rodriguez (3-5, 4.41), who seeks his fourth win of the season. He’ll be opposed by Fightins RHP Perci Garner (4-3, 4.14) on Sunday night.
