Curve Drop Series Opener in Erie, 11-5

Nick Kingham gave up 7 runs (6 earned) in the 11-5 loss.
ERIE, PA – Swirling winds did not aid the Curve nearly as much as it did the Erie SeaWolves on Monday night in an eventual, 11-5, loss at Jerry Uht Park. Andy Vasquez led the offense, finishing the game 3-for-4 with a double, homer and three RBI in the loss to Erie.

Altoona did what it has done so well this season on Tuesday and that was score in the first inning. After not scoring a run in the first on Sunday to break a streak of seven-straight games, the Curve plated a run on Tuesday thanks to a Stetson Allie single that scored Gift Ngoepe from second.

Nick Kingham (1-2) kept the SeaWolves off the board in the bottom of the inning before the offense went back to work with another run. This time, Elias Diaz worked a walk and Vasquez shot a double inside the line in left to score him from first.

That two-run lead was short-lived as the SeaWolves scored twice in the bottom of the inning to tie it with one of the two runs being unearned to Kingham after an error in the inning.

Neither team scored in the third but the Curve grabbed a run in the fourth when Jarek Cunningham floated a ball that was taken by the wind behind center fielder Jamie Johnson that he wasn’t able to hang on to. Vasquez was running on the play and scored all the way from first base to put the Curve back in front, 3-2.

The one-run advantage would be the last on the day for the Curve as Erie scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning to chase Kingham. He lasted 3.2 innings and permitted seven runs (six earned) in the loss.

Erie starter Warwick Saupold (2-2) settled in after the fourth, retiring the final six Curve batters he faced (five by strikeouts). Altoona didn’t have a baserunner from two down in the fourth until Diaz reached on an error with two down in the ninth. Vasquez jumped on a pitch from Corey Knebel following the error for his second homer of the year but the game was out of reach at that point.

Altoona (10-12) aims to snap its three-game losing streak on Wednesday when they meet the SeaWolves (10-12) for a doubleheader with Game 1 beginning at 11:05 a.m. LHP Joely Rodriguez (1-2, 5.12) will start in the first game on Wednesday for the Curve while RHP Tyler Sample (2-0, 1.00) starts in the second game on Wednesday.
