Common Antibiotic Linked to Heart Issues

Researchers say it's a small but significant issue.

New research is linking a common antibiotic to heart deaths. The Danish study looked at 5 million antibiotic treatment courses among adults 40 to 74 and found clarithromycin increased the risk of cardiac death by 76% compared to a type of penicillin.

Researchers stress the risk is small and say their findings need to be confirmed.

The FDA warned patients last year about another common antibiotic azithromycin, saying it could contribute to a deadly irregular heartbeat, especially in patients with heart problems. ‎
