Clearfield Hospital Maternity Department to Close

Maternity patients will be referred to DuBois beginning in April.
CLEARFIELD, CLEARFIELD COUNTY – Clearfield Hospital announced Friday they will close their maternity department, the Armstrong Birthing Center, effective April 7th.

After the department closes, patients will deliver their babies at DuBois Regional Medical Center (DRMC). For mothers needing care for an emergency birth, the emergency department at Clearfield Hospital is trained to handle those cases.

Dr. Thomas Carnevale, Clearfield’s obstetrician, will be on call at DuBois, and will continue to offer prenatal and postnatal care at his office in Clearfield.

Clearfield Hospital is an affiliate of Penn Highlands Healthcare. Officials said the main decision to close the department was based on the clinical and financial viability of operating the unit with one obstetrician. They have been unsuccessful in their recent efforts to recruit another obstetrician to the area.

The Maternity Center at DRMC offers private birthing rooms with state-of-the-art technology and a larger staff.

According to the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania, more than 40 obstetrics have closed in the state since 2000.
