HARRISBURG - A new report calls for a more aggressive effort to fight childhood obesity in Pennsylvania. The Childhood Obesity Report recommends a re-evaluation of school food programs to encourage healthier options, a requirement that physical education be a core subject, taught throughout the school year, and  that schools provide 30 minutes a day of vigorous to moderate activity  for students.

The Childhood Obesity Report also recommends nutrition information and counseling for pregnant women and the caregivers of children. It  calls for school districts to partner with YMCAs and other community organizations to fight childhood obesity.

The  Joint State Government Commission that issued the report is also calling for creation of a statewide Childhood Obesity Prevention and Advisory Board.
