CATA To Raise Bus Fare

CATA Bus services will be raising their prices in the near future.
STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - CATA Bus services will be raising their prices in the near future.

The general fare prices will increase by a quarter starting July 1, 2014. CATA representatives say it's the first time in four years they've had an increase in fare. They say it will help supplement a loss of federal benefits.

It's one of the most popular forms of transportation in Centre County. With over seven million riders in 2013, CATA is a big service provider for the area.

Now, thanks to a $300,000 cut in the alternatives fuels tax by the federal government, they're having to compensate.

"The fare increase is proposed for $1.50 to $1.75 on our regular CATA bus service," Director of Administration, Kimberly Fragola, said. "Our last fare increase was in 2010."

Monthly passes will increase, too, from $59 to $69. The four month pass will also go up.

But Fragola says the change didn't happen because of the federal cuts, instead the change comes by coincidence.

"Taking away this funding, it would have impacted us either way," she said. "It just so happens we had this plan, so it's a hit we would have absorbed just as we do with any funding cut."

She says it's the first time in four years CATA has increased fares and it was only a matter of time before it happened again.

"Prior to the fare increase in 2011, it had been eight years, so we typically go as long as we can, so it will probably be at least a few years again," Fragola said.
