BELLEFONTE, CENTRE COUNTY - Local businesses are participating in a weekend giveaway to help students in our region for back to school.

Verizon Wireless stores in Bellefonte, at 141 South Allegheny St., and the Nittany Mall in Centre County and the Verizon store in Johnstown are both hosting a backpack giveaway this weekend.

It's called the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. It's a national initiative to give students the tools they need to get ready for the school year.

40 backpacks will be given away at each store to elementary, middle and high school students who are accompanied by a parent.

Besides getting just a backpack, students will also receive free pens, pencils and other school supplies that will be stuffed inside the bags.

100,000 backpacks will be donated nationwide through this program.

Verizon Wireless Regional Manager David Morgan says they're excited for the opportunity to give back.

"Mom and dad don't have to go out and spend their money to get a new backpack for their child or pens or pencils," Morgan said. "Maybe they don't have that money or they wanted to get their kids shoes instead of school supplies. It's our way of giving back that way."

The giveaway is on a first come, first serve basis. It will begin at noon Saturday and run until 2:00 PM.
