Blood Moon Tonight

Clouds will probably spoil our view of a total lunar eclipse tonight.
A total lunar eclipse occurs tonight from just before 1am until about 6am. This type of eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the Earth's shadow. Because some sunlight filters around the outreaches of the Earth's atmosphere, often the eclipsed moon takes on a reddish hue. This is where the nickname "blood moon" comes from.

Weather is likely going to spoil our view of the moon. Though this is not too uncommon of an experience and you will have opportunities again in the future. This is the first of four total eclipses of the moon which will occur between tonight and September of 2015. The next total eclipse will occur on October 8th and should be visible in our area again. Of course, that is weather permitting.
