Rosemont, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament will make its first-ever appearance on the East Coast in 2017, as the league announced the event will take place at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. that year.
The venue switch coincides with the conference's recent additions of Maryland and Rutgers, both of which will become full members for the upcoming 2014-15 academic year.
All 17 previous editions of the tournament have been held either in Chicago or Indianapolis. The United Center will host the event in 2015 before it moves back to Bankers Life Fieldhouse the following year.
"We're very excited the Big Ten Conference has selected our nation's capital as the site for the 2017 Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament," said Maryland director of athletics Kevin Anderson. "This is yet another example of the Big Ten's commitment to our region and provides fans of Maryland and all conference teams on the East Coast easier access to enjoy this outstanding event."
