Belton's Stock Rising

Big plans for PSU junior after up-and-down sophomore season.
The tide rises once again for Bill Belton in this year’s Penn State training camp.

The junior who started last year as the team's number one tailback is showing signs of returning to top form.

Belton ran for a career-high 103 yards and three scores against Iowa but carried the ball just once in the season’s last four games.

Now with Belton passing summer classes to sure up eligibility, head coach Bill O’Brien says he expects big things from the New Jersey native.

“I’ve had a few heart-to-hearts with Billy,” O’Brien says. “I really think a lot of Billy and I think Billy has a great future. And I think he’s a great kid. He’s had a good camp. I just want him to keep it going. He’s going to play a lot of football for us this year. He’s worked hard, he’s quicker, he’s running the ball more decisively than he did last year, and he can catch the ball out of the backfield.”

Penn State’s season opener against Syracuse is just 10 days away with kickoff at MetLife Stadium set for 3:30 p.m. Aug. 31.
