Bellefonte Youth Center Goes Mobile

Bellefonte Youth Center Goes Mobile

As the Bellefonte Youth Center awaits moving into their new location, they're hitting the streets and going mobile.
After nearly 10 years, the BYC is closing their doors at the Temple Court Building on South Allegheny Street to move a few blocks away to 114 North Spring Street. The Youth Service Bureau can't get into the new building until August 1st and once they move in, they have to make some renovations. Until then, they're going mobile.

"We will be on the street, working in Bellefonte," says Andrea Boyles, the C.E.O. of the Youth Service Bureau.

Boyles says they'll mostly be meeting outside of their old location and traveling to different places to provide their outreach and services to the Bellefonte community until the new building is ready.

Boyles says she's happy the move is taking place during the summer when there are activities and field trips for the kids to go on.  She says she fears the the transition and move may be difficult for some of the kids.

"Some of our kids have had a lot of disappointments in their little lives," says Boyles.  "They protect themselves by sometimes not believing.  When we say 'This will be fine; we have a new location; it's going to be great,' that's a little hard fro them sometimes to believe."

Some of the volunteers hope the move attracts some new faces to the center.

"I think that it brings a new look," says Meghan Odon, an outreach volunteer.  "Instead of being older and being there forever, something new will bring more kids."

Boyles says she thinks in the end, the BYC's new home will be just what the kids and Bellefonte community need.

"I think it will be better because we've gone through this together," says Boyles.

Boyles says while they are mobile, it can be difficult to prepare the meals they have for the kids.
