BRIDGEHAMPTON, NEW YORK -

WELL WE CERTAINLY HAVE SOME LONG TENURED METEOROLOGISTS HERE AT WTAJ.

BUT, I'M NOT SURE ANY OF THEM HAVE BEEN DOING WEATHER AS LONG AS THE MAN IN THIS NEXT STORY.

CBS' ANTHONY MASON REPORTS FROM BRIDGEHAMPTON NEW YORK

ACROSS THE COUNTRY, 8500 VOLUNTEER OBSERVERS RECORD THE NATION'S WEATHER EVERYDAY, BUT NONE HAS BEEN DOING IT LONGER THAN 101 YEAR OLD RICHARD HENDRICKSON

HENDRICKSON: "That's 69 was the lowest last night. Right now, it is exactly 80." (11:00)

NARR; FOR 84 YEARS NOW, HENDRICKSON HAS BEEN MONITORING THE HIGHS AND LOWS FROM THE THERMOMETER SHELTER IN HIS BACKYARD IN BRIDGEHAMPTON, NEW YORK.

MASON (points to shelter): "Is this pretty much the way it's always been?" (14:40)
HENDRICKSON: "Oh yeah."
MASON: "Real simple."
HENDRICKSON: "Just like that."// "it's getting to show a little age in the joints."
MASON: "Like we all do."
HENDRICKSON: "Like we ALL get."

NARR: HE ALSO CHECKS THE RAINFALL DAILY... AND THEN GLIMPSES OUT HIS KITCHEN WINDOW TO CHECK THE WIND...

HENDRICKSON (looking out window): "It's clear. There's not a cloud in the sky."

NARR: BEFORE CALLING IT ALL IN... ON HIS ROTARY PHONE...

HENDRICKSON: "Yeah, Bridgehampton." (27:25)

HENDRICKSON: "Where the heck did you get that?"

NARR: HIS GRANDDAUGHTER SHARED IT WITH US:

HENDRICKSON: "Sure I remember this thing. I'll be damned." (37:00) "Here 1933. January. Clear and warm.// Went tor Riverhead with Dorothea. That's my first wife." (37:20/37:48)

MASON: "Weather was important to you because you were a farmer." (40:30)
HENDRICKSON: "Because I was a livestock farmer."

NARR: HIS FAMILY RAISED COWS AND CHICKENS ON MORE THAN 100 ACRES OF LAND.

MASON: "Was this your field up here?" (1:18:20)
HENDRICKSON: "That's the edge of the farm right there."

NARR: THIS WEEKEND THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL HONOR HIS 8 DECADES AS AN OBSERVER:

HENDRICKSON (on phone): "Am I what? Excited? Oh, yeah, sure. I can hardly talk." (1:28:00)

NARR: HE DOES IT FOR HIS COUNTRY, RICHARD HENDRICKSON SAYS...COLLECTING THE STATISTICS THAT TO THIS 101 YEAR FARMER ARE STILL JUST THE FACTS OF LIFE.
