Check Your Smoke Detectors

House fires increase during the winter.
ALTOONA - Local firefighters say calls this time of year go through the roof, and they say often it's for people who don't have fire detectors.

Altoona Fire Inspector Tim Hughes says the increase in fires is due to heaters, other utilities and extra cooking that comes with the holidays. On Wednesday, the Red Cross hosted a smoke detector awareness event at the Hite Company in Altoona urging people to make sure their detectors are up to date.

"The last couple months we've probably had four or five fires that are due to not maintaining certain appliances and stuff like that in the homes," Altoona Fire Inspector Tim Hughes says.

Smoke detectors range in price and can be relatively inexpensive.
