Cemetery Vandalism

After countless hours of cleanup vandals go after an area cemetery.
ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - After countless hours of cleanup vandals go after an area cemetery.

This past summer Oak Ridge Cemetery in Altoona had trash on the ground, overgrown grass and weeds, and graffiti.  But more than a hundred people took several weekends and cleaned it up. Now vandals have hit the cemetery again spray painting a wall, several tombstones, and knocking others over.

Michele Craig was one of the workers that volunteered their time to clean up Oak Ridge. She said it was devastating to see their hard work destroyed.

Margo Osterhout has generations of her family buried here. She called it heart breaking.

And she wants who ever did this to get a more practical punishment. She doesn’t want to see them go to jail; she wants them to work off their punishment in the cemetery. And Craig and the rest of the clean-up crew want people to have more respect for our cemeteries in general.

The group that cleaned up the cemetery is looking into paint options that make graffiti easier to be cleaned off.
