Break The Silence

Family of shooting victim starts group to raise awareness.
PHILIPSBURG, CENTRE COUNTY - It's been nearly 10 months since Traci Raymond was shot and killed by her estranged husband at the County Market store in Philipsburg. On Tuesday night friends, family and even a few strangers came together to try and start turning their pain into progress.

It was a small, but meaningful get together at the First Church of Christ in Philipsburg.

“We want to raise awareness to let people know they're not alone, they don't have to go through anything alone and that there is help out there and we just want to help everybody,” Traci’s friend and Co-Founder of Breaking The Silence Ministries Sherri Farmery says.

Because of that friends and family of Traci Raymond have started “Breaking the Silence Ministries,” a group dedicated to raising awareness and funds to help anyone involved in potentially abusive relationships.

“The more people came to us the more we realized we need to have information out there for them,” Traci’s sister Tammy Schnars says.

Tammy says the pain will never be replaced, but hopes this group will help fill the void.

“We have a loss, but maybe we can help somebody else. We don't want anyone else to go through this and that's why we're here,” Tammy says.

Only about a dozen people came out for the groups’ first meeting, but Tammy says this is just the beginning.

“We're starting out small, our goals are small but you know what that isn't where it's going to end. Our goals are going to get bigger and better every year,” Tammy says.

For now it's one step at a time, all to help honor the memory of a lost loved one.

“It makes me feel like I have a purpose and I can be somebody's voice and help them is really nice,” Sherri says.

“There's still pain that will never go away but again that's how we help. That's how we feel better is helping,” Tammy says.

The group plans to meet twice a month as they get going and hopes to hold their first big event in October.
