When it comes to childhood milestones, learning how to ride a bike is a major one! The great thing about bike riding is once you have it down, it really is never forgotten. But parents beware nearly 500,000 kids each year are involved in a bicycle related accident. So, how do you know when your child is ready? Daniela Hudson, better know as "The Bike Coach" says "start teaching between ages 3 and 6. Some children take to it naturally and others don't. You must be patient". Start by choosing the right bike. Your child should be able to stand over the top bar with both feet planted on the ground. Don't forget a helmet. It is critical you find one that fits snuggly on your child's head. Tell your child they must wear it every time they ride! In front of your house may not always be the safest place to teach your child to ride. Look for a large, paved, flat area with no traffic. Make sure you set the rules of the bike road and encourage your child to have fun. You may want to get on a bike yourself and enjoy a little exercise and family time, too.
