Assault or Self Defense?

Lawyer says his client, a Central Pennsylvania police officer was simply acting in self defense when charged with assault.
ALTOONA - Self defense or assault? That's what some are asking after an Altoona cop was charged with a felony assault almost one week ago in Pittsburgh.

Police Officer Matthew Plummer was charged after confronting a man who he says threw a bottle at a bus and exposed himself.

Altoona police have since reassigned Plummer and on Thursday, Plummer's lawyer told WTAJ his client was simply acting in self-defense.

"The individual took a swing at Mr. Plummer," said Steve Passarello, Plummer's attorney. "He missed and Mr. Plummer simply defended himself, hit him with one punch and knocked him to the ground."

A preliminary hearing for Plummer in Washington County is slated for later in September.
