Penn State Women's Hockey Ties with Union

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women’s hockey team closed out its first home series of 2017-18 with a 1-1 tie against the Union Dutchwomen on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Pegula Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period where each team was unable to capitalize on scoring chances, Union went on the power play and opened up scoring when Helen Markovic forehanded the puck into the back of the net to give Union a 1-0 lead.

Early in the final period, it was freshman Katie Rankin (Kanata, Ontario) poking in a goal off a rebound to even the score at one a piece and tallying her first career goal. Senior captain Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minn.) and sophomore Brooke Madsen (Eagan, Minn.) assisted on the goal to notch their first points of the season.

Shortly after, sophomore goaltender Daniela Paniccia (Oakville, Ontario) turned away multiple scoring chances for the Dutchwomen to keep the game at a stalemate. Paniccia turned away 20 shots on the afternoon.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the five minute overtime period.

Union’s Coco Francis went the distance in goal for the Dutchwomen and recorded 27 saves.

The Blue and White will be back at home Friday Oct. 13 and Saturday Oct. 14 as it plays host to the defending national champion Clarkson at Pegula Ice Arena. The games are set for 6 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
