The Nittany Lions (10-6, 3-3 ALC), who defeated the Tigers for the first time since 2007, earned their fifth straight 10-win campaign. Penn State dominated the first half en route to an 8-4 halftime lead before Princeton (10-5, 6-1 Ivy) closed the gap during the final 30 minutes. The Tigers netted three of the frame’s first four goals before ending the contest with five unanswered strikes.
In her final home game of her career, senior Mackenzie Cyr (Westminster, Md.) secured her first six-point game since May 12, 2013 with three goals and three assists. The standout now boasts career totals of 105 assists and 199 points as she ranks third and 10th, respectively, on the program’s all-time list.
STATE COLLEGE - Sophomore midfielder Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) matched her career high with four goals, while junior attacker Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) added three helpers. Classmates Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md./2g, 1a) and Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, N.J./2g) and sophomore Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md./2g) contributed multi-point games.
Defensively, senior Lauren Purvis (Maple Glen, Pa.), who leads the ALC in caused turnovers per game, secured a game-high four caused turnovers, while Mosketti, who corralled a game-high four draw controls, added three. Freshman goalkeeper Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) turned aside seven shots, including two Princeton attempts during the Tigers’ feverish comeback attempt.
The Nittany Lions, who went 12-for-13 on clears, out shot Princeton by a 25-24 margin and held advantages in both ground balls (13-10) and caused turnovers (11-6). The Tigers finished 12-for-12 on clears and won 16 draws to Penn State’s 11. Sarah Lloyd paced the squad with a four-goal game, while Annie Woehling earned the loss after allowing 12 goals.
Penn State will return to action Thursday, May 1 when it faces Johns Hopkins in the first round of the ALC tournament, to be held at Northwestern’s Lakeside Field. Opening draw between the fourth-seeded Nittany Lions and fifth-seeded Blue Jays is set for 3 p.m. ET.
