"My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Paterno family," George said. "Penn State is a world-class university, and Joe Paterno helped make it what it is today."
A fixture at Penn State for decades, Coach Paterno led the Nittany Lions to victory on the field and helped to elevate Penn State academically while off the field. Never failing to attract donors, Coach Paterno also gave millions of dollars of his own money back to the university.
George said that Coach Paterno always aimed for the highest level of class and dignity for Penn State.
"Coach Paterno did a lot for the Penn State students," George said. "He wasn't just a football coach. He was much more than that."
George said that he thinks Coach Paterno will be remembered as a man who genuinely sought to make Penn State a symbol of academic and athletic excellence.
"Joe Paterno cared for his family first, but Penn State and his university family weren't far behind," George said. "He will be sorely missed by all, and the legacy of this man will live on for generations."
