After Wilfredo Tovar hit the first of his two homers in the second inning, Altoona was able to answer and take a lead in the third thanks to a pair of throwing errors by the starter Erik Goeddel (9-5). Carlos Paulino worked a walk to start the third and then Mel Rojas, Jr. singled through the right side to put two on with no out. Sadler put down a solid sacrifice bunt out to Goeddel but the B-Mets starter tried to get the lead runner at third and threw the ball into left field.
That error allowed Paulino and Rojas, Jr. to score and put the Curve in front. Alen Hanson laid down a bunt on the very next play that went out to Goeddel. This time, Goeddel made a poor throw to first base that permitted Sadler to trot home. After the back-to-back errors, the Curve led, 3-1.
Binghamton added a run in the fourth off Sadler with a solo home run by Cory Vaughn but that was the last run Sadler permitted on the night. In his six innings, Sadler allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and the six strikeouts.
Altoona was able to widen its lead in the seventh and they’d need every run they’d get off Armando Rodriguez. With one out it was once again Paulino reaching base, this time with single and then Rodriguez attempted to pick him off at first. His lobbed throw went over first baseman Allan Dykstra’s head and Paulino was able to get to third base. Rojas, Jr. followed with a triple to score Paulino to widen the lead to two.
Pinch-hitter Andy Vasquez then put down a bunt with Rojas, Jr. bolting for home on the squeeze play and the bunt stayed fair for a successful squeeze.
It was that run that proved to be the winner as Tovar’s second home run of the game was a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh off Jhonathan Ramos that pulled Binghamton within one. Ryan Beckman pitched a scoreless eighth while Luis Sanz closed in the ninth for his 14th save.
Hanson and Rojas, Jr. had the only multi-hit games on Wednesday while Adalberto Santos had his 12-game hit streak end with an 0-for-3 day.
