ALTOONA – Adrian Sampson’s career-high eight strikeouts and one run allowed over seven superb innings wasn’t enough as the offense fell silent in a, 1-0, loss to the Akron RubberDucks on Tuesday night. Altoona’s offense notched only three hits off ‘Ducks pitching on Tuesday.

Sampson (3-3) was sharp on Tuesday, retiring the first eight batters he faced in order with four strikeouts before an error by Alen Hanson allowed the ‘Ducks to put their first runner on in the third. The Redmond, Wash. native worked around it and induced a groundout from Tyler Naquin to end the inning.

Akron ended up scoring the only run of the game in the fifth with two outs off Sampson. Jordan Smith doubled before Justin Toole walked and Naquin stroked a single to center to bring Smith in. Sampson settled back in from there and did not allow an Akron baserunner via a walk or hit in his final 2.1 innings on the bump. It’s the second straight seven-inning start for Sampson, who has allowed a combined three runs in his last two starts spanning 14 innings.

Toru Murata (3-0), Adam Miller and Shawn Armstrong did just enough to keep the Curve bats quiet on Tuesday. Murata spun six scoreless innings and whiffed five. Altoona had him on the ropes in the first and second inning with two on and two out but couldn’t crack him either time, leaving both runners on in both instances.

In the ninth, Stetson Allie drew a two-out walk to put the tying run on and Drew Maggi was called upon to pinch run. Maggi attempted to steal during Andy Vasquez’s at bat and was caught to end the game.

Altoona (17-26) and Akron (29-15) meet for the third game of the four-game series at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

On the bump for the Curve on Wednesday morning will be RHP Nick Kingham (1-4, 3.35), who searches for his first win since his first start of the season. The RubberDucks counter with RHP Joe Colon (2-2, 2.82) on Wednesday.
