The Curve jumped on starter Tyler Pill (3-5) in the first inning by sending eight men to the plate and scoring three runs to take a big early lead. Drew Maggi led off the game with a walk before he was sacrificed to second by Alen Hanson. Keon Broxton singled through the middle to drive home Maggi and just like that, the Curve were up, 1-0.
Elias Diaz followed with a single before Allie grounded out to put two outs on the scoreboard to setup Willy Garcia. Garcia answered with two away and doubled into left to clear the bases to make it 3-0 Curve.
Zack Dodson (1-3) worked through the first four innings unscathed while striking out five and surrendering just two this. Things changed in the fifth. Pill led off the inning with a grounder to third that Jarek Cunningham was able to field but threw high to first to allow Pill to reach. Darrell Ceciliani followed and homered to right-center to put the B-Mets on the board. He got Brian Burgamy to ground out for the inning’s first out but then five straight hits ended up helping flip the scoreboard in favor of Binghamton.
All told, the B-Mets sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven times (four earned) off Dodson.
They went on to add two in the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Andy Vasquez, who typically plays on the infield or outfield, came in to get the final out of the eighth. He ran into trouble in the ninth, allowing a pair of homers and three total runs.
Garcia hit a two-out, three-run homer in the eighth. It was his eighth home run of the season and it also gave him 5 RBI for the game, which tied a career-high. Broxton, who singled in the run in the first, extended his hit streak to six games in the loss.
Altoona (20-37) will try to snap the 10-game losing streak at 7 p.m. Wednesday night as they take on the B-Mets (31-25) at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
On the bump for the Curve will be LHP Joely Rodriguez (2-4, 4.21), who searches for his third win of the season. He’ll be opposed by RHP Hansel Robles (3-2, 4.63) on Wednesday.
