WINDBER, SOMERSET COUNTY - Just before seven o’clock Saturday night, Windber Borough Police were called out to an apartment on 19th Street for a shooting.
Denver Blough, 25, was arrested and charged with killing Caressa Kovalcik, 23, and attempting to kill her unborn baby.
Kovalcik was taken to Conemaugh Hospital, where she died shortly after an emergency c-section.
"The baby was transferred by helicopter to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh," said Jeffrey Lees, Cambria County Chief Deputy Coroner.
Police say Blough lived in the apartment with Kovalcik and their 11-month-old son.
One neighbor we talked with, who did not want to be identified, saw Blough being arrested.
"Me and my daughter were walking from Sheetz and we were down there and these officers came flying out of Sheetz and they said there was a shooting up here on 19th Street."
She says this shooting is hitting a little to close to home. And for her, the saddest part is the fact two children are now without parents.
"It's just too scary, it really is. And it's a shame that the babies have to suffer from situations like this."
Blough remains behind bars at the Somerset County Jail. No bond has been set. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for June 11.
