ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - UPMC Altoona and the union representing its registered nurses are headed back to the bargaining table. The hospital says the next negotiating session is scheduled for this coming Friday, January 31.
According to a news release issued by SEIU Healthcare, hospital management reached out to the union asking to restart talks. Local union officials said yesterday they hoped the threat of a one-day strike on February 11 would prompt the hospital to go beyond what it called the last, best and final offer.
UPMC Altoona says it sees the upcoming talks as a favorable step, but remains prepared for all contingencies. The hospital has said it will bring in nurses, if its unionized RNs do go on strike.
