They walked off the job, and began to picket at 7am Tuesday morning.
The union has been planning this strike for weeks after contract negotiations with UPMC Altoona fell apart.
The union says the hospital will spend millions on replacement nurses who are contracted for four days.
After the strike ends, there will be a transition period before the striking nurses are allowed back to work.
The hospital is not saying how long that could take.
