ALTOONA - Four young men, all from the Altoona area are finalists for a chance to play at one of the biggest music events of the year.
The group is called the big time...and now their one of 40 finalists for a chance to live up to that name...and be a part of this years grammys.
From their parents basement to a shot at being a part of one of the biggest music events of the year, “The Big Time” is trying to become just that.
“My first thought was why are we on this page? Who believes in us that much that we belong there?" Lead Singer Derek Mrdjenovic says.
Derek, Aaron, Brandon, and Dillon, all longtime friends from the Altoona area now find themselves as one of 40 finalists for a spot to play in the Grammy Awards Gig of a Lifetime.
The opportunity hasn't come easily.
“Even if it's just one show and it may not be the biggest the thing ever we'll still be here five days out of the seven a week practicing,” Guitarist Brandon Porta says.
The band started four years ago when lead singer Derek Mrdjenovic was in 9th grade.
Last week the group wrapped up their first full coast to coast tour.
“I never thought that I'd be traveling with like 3 of my best friends driving around the country playing music for people,” Porta says.
“Just walking out on that stage was just so incredible. And people were so into it and it was like it was the real thing,” Mrdjenovic says.
And it was something they had been imagining since they were kids watching local shows throughout the region.
“In the beginning our inspiration was local music. Going to shows and really seeing those older guys playing original music. We thought that was so cool. We thought they were rock stars,” Mrdjenovic says,
Now they could be the stars, but they need some help.
The Grammys Gig of a Lifetime competition will be voted on by the fans.
And if they happen to top the charts.
“It would just be all the hard work we've put in the past few years had paid off. and it would put us on that platform that we've been trying to break through too,” Mrdjenovic says.
“It'd probably be the best feeling in the world. That'd be a great Christmas gift to be honest with you,” Drummer Aaron Porta says.
Voting for the Grammys Gig of a Lifetime runs until January 10th. Click here to vote for The Big Time!
