Summer Reading Programs Kick Off at a Library Near You!

"Every hero has a story!" is this year's theme at the Altoona Area Public Library.

As Adrienne Brown, Altoona Public Library's Children's Services Director explains, "We're really hoping to prevent the summer slide and to get kids in here, involved and learning over the summer."

Altoona Public librarians enlisted help from the kids themselves to promote this summer's jam-packed reading program -- for kids of all ages.

As Brown explains, "We're offering toddler story time programs, preschool story time, elementary club during the day and the Construction club."
That's one of the new programs this summer.

As Brown will tell you, "Kids love a good story. They still enjoy reading and we have e-books for those who prefer to read on their tablets, we have lots of books here, picture books, chapter books, non-fiction."

For teens, there's books you can read and listen to, games, DVDs, movies and even the Japanese comic book sensation - Manga!

Teen Services' Coordinator Amy Horell says, "To get them reading anything is a good thing and get them away from the screens - they're very passionate about them."

And Halliday Patterson, a Manga Art Instructor and fan agrees. "There's fantasy, there are reality ones, there's mystery - like Death Note.  That's a really good mystery one - it's suspense-filled - but you know who the killer is."

Grown up "kids" are invited to join in as well and log minutes reading!

Shelley Williams, Adult Circulation Librarian explains,"We're not just a library with books.  We have a lot of services we provide and I think that people know that they can come in and see a smiling face and someone they know."

A Magic Show this Thursday will kick-off Altoona's program

Most other Blair County Libraries are hosting summer reading programs.

In Centre County, the Schlow Library kicked off their expansive program June 1st, but everyone is welcome to join in the fun.

In Cambria County, the Johnstown Library Summer Reading Program is set to begin June 29th.
