HASTINGS BOROUGH, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- Hastings Borough is celebrating two major events this week, the first is the town’s 125th birthday and the second is the Western District Firemen’s Convention.  It’s the first time this convention has ever been held in the borough.

"It's quite competitive to get the bid for convention among towns when you're dealing with larger ones like New Kensington,” said Jon Bem, Secretary, President of Western Dist. Fire Convention.  “For a town like Hastings to get this- it’s is a big deal for us."

The town’s is expected to double in size for the weekend.  More than 400 departments are apart of the Western District.

The event is also a chance for friends to catch up.

"I joined the fire company in 1953 so that's over 60 some years," said Ronald Easly who has been a volunteer firefighter since he was 18.

Easly said he hopes the event will attract the younger generation to consider to joining their local departments.

“Even if 10-15 kids can join the fire company it will be a good start,” said Easly.

The convention runs all weekend long with its biggest event on Saturday with the parade.
