East Freedom, Blair County, Pa. - Several possible candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives for Pennsylvania have emerged since Congressman Bill Shuster announced his decision to not run again.
WTAJ reported Thursday State Senator John Eichelberger would be campaigning for Congressman Shuster's seat.
Saturday he made the official announcement at the Freedom Township Fire Hall, the same place he announced his campaign for State Senator 12 years ago.
"I went to Harrisburg and you came with me to challenge and transform the old system," said Eichelberger. "Now my friends, we've done that and it's time to take that change to Washington."
Senator John Eichelberger is ready to hit the campaign trail. Eichelberger says the decision to run for congress was difficult.
"A lot of my colleagues in the Senate asked me to stay for another term, I'd have to run for that but if the people would elect me again, should I stay there longer. I prayed about it, I felt that I was led to do this."
About 100 supporters were in East Freedom for the announcement.
State Rep. John McGinnis says he thinks Eichelberger is the man for the job.
"To take on these issues, promote our values, those values of life and freedom. I'm just so happy to be here today and happy he's running for the 9th Congressional District Seat," McGinnis said to the crowd of supporters.
Eichelberger says he's looking forward to battling it out with candidates Art Halvorson and Adam Sedlock.
"It'll be a spirited debate as we go through things. I hope everyone stays above board. I don't run negative ads and campaigns and I hope everybody stays with that same thing. Hopefully we'll have a good contest this year and voters will make a good decision."
