A real estate scam is going through the area again. People are taking money to rent out homes, but they don't own the homes. And the people that paid the money are just out.
The Altoona woman didn't want us to use her name, but she checked out the person who said she owned the house and the name matched online records. So she sent her an $800 check.
The home was actually for sale, not for rent. Realtor Tracy Wilt got about ten phone calls on that same property. She says the scammers post the fake rental notices on Craig’s List, Zillow, and Trulia.
Her advice is to never give out personal information or money to someone you have not met. She also recommends always going through a realtor. She says they are licensed to protect the public from scams like this.
Now the victim is still looking for a place to live and is in worse shape than she was before. She says it is devastating because they didn’t have the money to lose, and now they have even less money for a move when they find a place.
The victim filed a police report but it will be tough to recover any money.
