Police save man's life using tourniquet

STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - A man is alive today thanks to the efforts of State College police.

Early in the morning on July 15, police heard glass break and saw a 25-year-old man pulling his arm out of a store window on South Garner Street. He fled at first, but when police caught up with him, his arm was covered in blood.

Police used a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, and he was life flighted to UPMC Altoona where he underwent emergency surgery. He is currently recovering there.

Trauma experts said the tourniquet saved his life. State College police officers received training on the use of tourniquets two years ago.  Each officer is issued a tourniquet as part of their duty gear.
