November said to be worst month for deer-related crashes

Employees at Professionals Auto Body are keeping busy.

November is said to be the worst month for deer-related crashes, so they see a lot of cars damaged by deer.

"Right now when we're at our peek deer claims will be about one of five to seven of the claims that we do," Ron Perretta, from Professionals Auto Body, said. "So there's an awful lot of them and it has already started."

If you've hit one, you're not alone.

According to State Farm, Pennsylvania is the third highest in the nation for deer claims. That means you have a 1 in 63 chance of crashing.

If you do find yourself facing a deer in the road, insurance companies tell drivers it's best not to swerve.

"If somebody does swerve to miss the deer and then they lose control of the car and cause damage to either their car, property, or injuries to others, then it falls under collision coverage with most likely the higher deductible," Tammy Kehr, a State Farm Agent, said.

So you hit a deer, now what?

Well, it's under comprehensive coverage and that usually means a smaller deductible, which is a good thing because the average claim is more than $4,000. That's up from last year.

The price seems to keep increasing because the cost to repair certain car parts is getting more expensive.

"A lot of it comes with the safety devices that they're putting on vehicles," Perretta explained. "Every year manufacturers are putting more and more safety devices and what comes with those are cost of repairs."

So as you head out this month, remember prime time for deer is dusk to dawn.
