A new list of the top towns in the state for job seekers features a town in our region.
According to nerdwallet.com, State College ranks #11 on the Top 20 list of towns in Pennsylvania job seekers go to for work.
"I would agree with it. Obviously, State College and the whole Centre region is a dynamic, growing area," Director of Penn State's Career Services, Jeff Garis, said.
Garis helps Penn State students find jobs every day. He says a #11 ranking is accurate.
"Obviously, we're not a large, urban area," he said. "That can have a limitation. We don't have a huge employer or corporate place here, but I'm a big believer in taking what can be a weakness and turning it into a strength. Our employers here are very visible and I think it's not that hard for job seekers to identify them."
According to nerdwallet.com, Pennsylvania's job market is very similar to the national market, it's still recovering. Questions like, 'Is the city growing?', 'Can you afford to live in the city comfortably?', and 'Are most people employed?' help compile the top 20 list.
State College falls in the middle, with a below-average unemployment rate of 5.7%, a median household income of just over $24,000 and monthly homeowner costs of about $1,700.
"I was surprised, actually," State College Mayor Elizabeth Goreham said. "I think a lot of the data is older information. State College has gone through a slump."
Goreham thinks State College should be higher than #11, but expects that will happen soon. She says State College is becoming a big hub for entrepreneurship.
"We have a major university here with brilliant students who would like to stay here and we would like them to stay," she said. "We're potentially a wonderful silicone valley of the state and we're doing everything we can to encourage it."
Penn State is offering a job fair on May 19 this year for anyone interested in finding work in the Centre region.
