Landmark restaurant says goodbye?

Coney Island Lunch opened in Johnstown in 1916

Johnstown, Cambria County, Pa - Social media is buzzing over what appears to be the end of Coney Island Lunch.  On Sunday, many people in Johnstown spotted a sign in the window that thanked customers for their many years of patronage.

The website Johnstown.com posted a photo that was shared by many people on Facebook.

The white banner covers most of the window keeping anyone from seeing inside the famous restaurant.

Coney Island Lunch was established in 1916 and has been run by four generations of the Contacos family. WTAJ is working to contact the owners to get more details and whether this is truly the end of a downtown staple.

Several months ago there were rumors the restaurant was going out of business, but the Contacos family told WTAJ that they were only adjusting their hours but enjoyed the free publicity.

The restaurant survived two floods and the loss of regular customers after the steel mills closed.

Many people we spoke to in Johnstown said the restaurant appeared to be busy for breakfast and lunch this week.  They were shocked and saddened by the news.
