BEDFORD, BEDFORD COUNTY – State Police are now investigating a death at the Bedford County Correctional Facility.
David Kessling, warden at the facility, said that on Sunday, inmate Mark Cook, 43, died. Kessling continued on, saying Cook had a history of health problems.
"Started having shortness of breath, pushed button to alert staff, needed to go to medical, officer responded, fortunately it was an EMT."
He was then taken inside, to the medical unit. The nurse was called over, but when she got there Cook died.
State officials are now involved in an investigation into the death.
"The only thing we can do is to investigate it, and make sure, review our policy and procedures and make sure that we're doing everything that we possibly can do to ensure this doesn't occur."
Right now there's a lot of emotion in the prison. Kessling said just because they're inside of a jail, doesn't mean death doesn't happen.
"On top of that, his brother's here. His brother I spoke to him this am this office, he's having a difficult time, understandably dealing with this as well."
Kessling said staff wishes they could have done more to save him.
The jail is still waiting results of the autopsy. State police are continuing to investigate.
